The Ice Cube Effect

IceCubeEffect – Clear Summary

A citizen-led climate solution by Jack Kerr, founder of GI Guides

What is the IceCubeEffect?

The IceCubeEffect is a grassroots climate stabilisation concept that uses reflective floating rafts made from ocean-durable waste materials to cool the surface of the sea. It’s designed to be deployed in historically frozen polar zones, like the Arctic, where sea ice has retreated and the ocean is absorbing too much heat.

Why It Matters

The Earth’s oceans absorb over 90% of excess global heat. When polar ice disappears, we lose a natural mirror that kept the planet stable. Meanwhile, our oceans are full of floating plastic waste. This idea turns a problem into a tool: use waste to cool the water and buy time against climate tipping points.

How It Works (In 6 Simple Steps):

  1. Identify floating waste already proven to survive at sea (HDPE, PVC tarp, etc.)
  2. Assemble into raft panels — no new manufacturing needed
  3. Deploy in cold, low-biodiversity ocean zones (e.g. Arctic gyres)
  4. Contain using GPS buoys (no anchors or chemicals)
  5. Monitor cooling impact via satellite and local temperature data
  6. Scale up or down as needed — it’s fully modular and reversible

Why It’s Different

  • Uses only existing materials (waste)
  • Requires no chemicals or risky upper-atmosphere work
  • Doesn’t interfere with marine ecosystems
  • Simple enough to be built, tested, and improved collaboratively
  • Scalable and adaptable — not theoretical

Who I Am

My name is Jack Kerr. I’m an ex-military engineer and founder of GI Guides. After a brain injury in service, I was tested and confirmed to have advanced spatial and systems reasoning. I’ve used that to design the IceCubeEffect: a logical, doable intervention to help stabilise our climate using the things we already have.

What I’m Looking For

This concept is free for others to build on. I’m looking for content creators, climate communicators, researchers, engineers, and supporters who can help take it further — whether through discussion, visibility, or testing.
